mile-per-hour and that's going to be the theme around here during the course of the day. it will be quite cool into the afternoon as we've had a cold front push through during the overnight hours. showers off to the east and push across the bay and into st. michaels still getting shower activities. here we're done with the rain showers. might see a few sprinkles during the afternoon but the winds will be gusty at times and we're expecting gusts from 25-30 miles per hour and that will set us up for a cold one tonight. our overnight lows some of the coldest of the season with temperatures in the mid 30s here in town and even 20s off to the north and west. here is your forecast. mix of clouds and sun and windy at times and a high temperature of 49 degrees. i'll have more details on the holiday weekend in a few minutes. let's get to lauren demarco with a look at our morning traffic. we have delays on the beltway. montgomery county starting to
7:03 am
cause a problem here. it's on the inner loop. let me tell you about this wreck that we've been following. northbound indian head highway approaching oxon hill we've been dealing with this all morning long there was an accident north of kirby hill road. the north bound lanes of 210 remain blocked off with everyone diverted on to livingston road. right now delays from palmer. into montgomery county, a look at the delays. the inner loop, everybody headed up toward connect. it's because of an accident at the mormon tom pell, past connecticut. squeeng by to the right and delays leaving old georgetown and past connecticut. so a slow go through montgomery county. an earlier accident on the inner loop near 214 central avenue is gone and cleared off to the shoulder. northbound 270 working an accident right near democracy

7:05 am
for. it's one reason why some stores, including wal-mart, are open on thanksgiving. >> we're here at the wal-mart. >> reporter: retailers have made adjustments this season, including leaner inventories and bargain discounts. and for retailers such as kmart, there is a new approach altogether. >> we started at beginning of november that every friday and saturday we had specials for the same pricing we would run on black friday. so we kind of spread it out so the customer had the opportunity without having to fight the crowds. >> reporter: but for many shoppers black friday is still black friday and that means getting up early to go bargain hunting. >> i'm looking at a sony 32- inch and my brother is in side looking at a 46-inch. we're trying to come in real early and see what we can get. >> reporter: retailers could wind up with better numbers than expected this holiday season. according to a recent survey, a third of the people polled plan to spend more money than they
7:06 am
thought they could a few months ago. lauren sivon, fox news. thousands rushed the doors at tysons corner. sherry ly is there but some shoppers got there real early, didn't they? >> reporter: they got here -- as you mentioned, they opened at midnight and this place was packed almost from the start. people are looking for bargains. we have one store over here with 50% off. we have hoodies on sale here and over here we have 30% off. this is what black friday is all about. now some people found what they wanted, other people, we did find empty handed. still there is plenty of time to shop. this is a big place and it has been jam packed with shoppers since midnight. the first department stores open at 5:00 a.m. and hundreds were waiting outside of macy's. they rush in as soon as the doors opened. it's been like this all morning long. more than 300 stores at tysons corner center open since midnight. it's the first time the mall
7:07 am
has done this o black friday. tens of thousands of people are leaving with the bags full but the deals some shoppers say are mixed. >> there's some $5 deals and $10 deals. things are crazy, i expected sales to be better and bigger. i was disappointed. i'm empty handed. i'm still looking. >> reporter: and she said she's not leaving here without something. and we have some nappers here. everybody is worn out from shopping since midnight. several people using the couches and chairs to get a quick nap and that's why, take a look at the starbucks, the coffee shop, getting the jolt of caffeine to get the second win so they can keep on shopping a few more hours. coming up at 8:00, we'll show you an application for your smart phone that will show you where you can find the best
7:08 am
deals on the things that you want. so you want to stay tuned for that, steve. >> thank you, sherry. we'll see you sen. v-dot is trying to keep traffic moving. that area under major construction. so v-dot will offer lunchtime shuttles and timed traffic signals that will carry crowds from businesses to restaurants and back. it will run every ten minutes to popular tysons destinations. one lucky shopper had a leg up. one woman was a v.i.p., allowing her to go into the shop at 4:30, half an hour before everyone else and given $1,000 to spend. she's a police officer in bowie. two years ago she went to pay at the best buy register only to discover her husband had deactivated her credit cards for the day.

so no shopping on black friday. she'll make up for it today. we are getting more details about the thanksgiving spread. the obamas friends and family members, including six different pies, turkey, honey bakes ham, oyster stuffing, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. the president's favorites were the turkey and pull pin pie. the present also took some time out of his day to call 10 u.s. service members stationed in war zones. the preside told him he is grateful for his sacrifices to the country and in his weekly address to the nation, he thanks all military men and women. and the white house is still not commenting on the party crashers that showed up to the state dinner. but this morning the bravo tv network is talking and what they have to say about this northern v>> and we'll talk wit publisher with a newspaper who has covered the couple and

7:16 am
the upper 50s. so that's great for people. >> good day, as i said, to stay inside and shop. >> that's what you're going to do. let's check in with lauren demarco. >> a lot of the trouble is got. here we are on the inner loop past connecticut, it's wide open. this is in the last ten minutes. the accident is gone at mormon temple and everything is back up to speed in montgomery county. in toward the beltway, no problems there, but reports of an accident northbound 270 at democracy boulevard, not impacting traffic too badly. what is impacting traffic is northbound 210, indian head highway for anyone headed up to the oxon hill area.
7:17 am
we have an accident on going for some time this morning on kirby road and forced on to livingston road and traffic gets by to the right. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. braa tv -- bravo tv admitted that the couple is being filmed to prep for the event of the state house dinnerment a bravo spokesperson said they were invited to the event and that the producers had no reason to believe otherwise. a lawyer for the couple says his clients were cleared by the white house to be there. the white house refusing to comment. however the secret service now admits the procedures were not followed at one check point to determine if the two were indeed on the guest list. joining us now on the phone is dan mcdermott who is the publisher of the warren county
7:18 am
report newspaper which is out in the area where oasis winery is which the couple owns. dan, good morning. >> good morning. it's nice to be here. keeping me from saving my money on the stores today. >> you would be out with many others out and about this morning. and we have to say at this point, the allegations that mikael salahi will be on real housewives of d.c., your newspaper is putting out that they are filming? >> yes. i was out -- and we have pictures of six or seven different camera folks and boom microphones and they were there from real housewives and it's a done deal and this ceented it and it's been known for sometime. they took some footage of me and a producer and handed me a four page legal document to
7:19 am
asked me to sign it and it said you can't talk about the show and i didn't sign the agreement but i got a copy of it, but it looks like it was a done deal to me. >> and when they were filming out there and which has been the center the debate about the legal actions going on there and the website says there will be a grand reopening sometime next year. what is going on? >> i wouldn't pack your backed for the grand reopening. grapes are dead. i i spoke to koren salahi, the grandmother, she said they're down to a few bottles of wine and they're down to bankruptcy. apparently a few years ago shaquille o'neal tried to buy the winery and he left because it was too crazy of a situation because of the family feud. but for any reporters covering
7:20 am
it, it is like a falcon's crest type of thing, one side is saying the other side but i would say the winery is not in great shape at all and we'll see what the notoriety from this brings it. >> for those that cover this couple and family and familiar with the winery, does any of the news about the party at the white house, does any of this come as a surprise? >> well it's a surprise when someone crashes the white house. but for folks who know the couple, they clearly are interested in being famous. anyone w would seek out to be on a reality show where your relationship with your wife is exposed and for the world to see, to be in that kind of hourglass, it's not something most folks would seek out, i certainly wouldn't. if this floats your boat. and i talked to a relative who said they didn't go in there with guns blazing, they just walked right in. so are they going to be the
7:21 am
criminal balloon boy type legacy or is this going to be viewed as a heroic hoax or gag that they accomplished. who knows. but they certainly got their ten minutes of fame and it's probably going to be a ratings bonanza for the tv series. >> which is most likely why this played out in the first place. and for you and the good folks at the worn county report and with all of the new spin and the news of the winery and the white house, where do you go from here? how will you follow up on thi > well right now the local angle is the winery and how they're doing and how the family is doing. it's a sad story. but also they're now saying that they were invited or cleared, they're using careful words and one question i have, i'm wondering if -- he's in charge of the polo cup. they are the owners or
7:22 am
organizers of america's polo cup which is a tournament where one country comes and plays the united states and whoever wins gets the polo cup. well next year according to the website india is going to be the country so i'm wondering if their invitation or that they're excuse is someone from the indian delegation had invited them. so we'll pursue that angle. >> sounds good. and we invite folks to check out your reports as well. dan mcdermott with the warren county report. thanks for staying on top of everything. >> my pleasure. have a great black friday. >> thanks, dan, enjoy the shopping. >> and as we say in the news business, the story has legs. we'll hear about it for a while. it's 43 degrees. thank you for staying with us on this friday morning. we'll tell you where you can work off that thanksgiving dinner for free. then a local band gets a big honor. a chance to perform in the
7:23 am
macy's thanksgiving day parade. we have highlights of their performance when fox 5 morning news continues. here's to discovering that the little things in life are often big things and the time well spent doesn't always mean money must be spent people everywhere are building their lives on more solid ground through sound choices and a smart approach to their finances and they're turning to suntrust

7:25 am
7:26 am
welcome back. it's 7:25 now. here is something to think about after sitting down for the thanksgiving feast and all of the left overs. most americans consumed more than 2,000 calories during their thanksgiving meal. so if those pants are feeling tight this morning and you wa to work off some calories,
7:27 am
you're in luck. gold's gym is helping americans trim the fat. today through sunday clubs nationwide are opening their doors to the public free of charge. just a little hint. it talks about half an hour on the treadmill to burn off just one -- one cup of stuffing. >> in the last couple of days i feel like i've even four times the national average. it will take me months. 7:26. some local students got a long walk, call it a mch in the macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york. here it is, video of d.c.'s ballou marching band. congratulations everybody. they are the first d.c. high school band to perform in the parade. they played michael jackson. i hope you had a great time in
7:28 am
new york. and 7:26 and 43 degrees. >> coming up next, why thanksgiving got off to a shaky stato buy for everybody on your shopping list without going broke. we'll talk to a shopping expert when fox 5 morning news continues.
7:29 am
7:30 am
7:31 am
7:30 on this friday morning. howard county police looking for the gunman who tried to hold up a jiffy lube in elkridge. he pointed a gun at a worker and demanded money and the worker ran out of the back door. the suspect did fire one shot but nobody was injured. in virginia crews have mixed the water main that broke on monday. it broke on glebe road in arlington. was worker was electrocuted at the site on wednesday and another seriously hurt.
7:32 am
thanksgiving gt off to a shaky start in virginia. seismologists say an earthquake measuring 2.5 shook the area. and several people felt the earth move. and if you've ever been in one, you notice it. >> you don't expect it to happen in virginia, but no major damage. >> once in a while. we're off to a chilly start. >> and we aren't expected it to budge and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. get ready. old man winter is here. >> you're bringing the news today. >> satellite radar. let's talk about the showers that moved in overnight. for the most part if you're out over to the east and st. michaels you're getting shower activity but points to the west you can see the cutoff. out to west, look at that, see the white on the map that is snow falling and someof that sneakinto western maryland and they could possibly get a
7:33 am
couple of inches of snow. so be ready for some winter weather. here in washington, not a terrible day. i think we will see some sunshine working in but it will be cool and blustery with winds 20-30 miles per hour. it will feel chilly during the course of the day. in winchester, 14, down at patuxent naval air station, 14 and in ocean city, 16 mile-per- hour winds and they'll be very, very gusty during the course of the day today as we watch this cooler and drier air moving in from the north and the west. temperatures, it's cool. 43 in washington. 39 in gaithersburg. 40 at dulles. 41 in manassas. still working on this number in culpeper. i don't think it's in the 20s there. and highs today upper 40s, so cooler than yesterday. here is a look at today's forecast. mix of clouds and one working in as well. windy at times, highs in the upper 40s and winds out of the north and west at 15-25, gusting at times to about 30 miles per hour. tonight we're going to be cold.
7:34 am
i want to emphasize cool air moving in overnight. 36 in town. cooler temperatures off to the north and west and winds will stay up out of the west at 15- 20 miles per hour. so cool morning tomorrow and then set up for a great holiday weekend. 53 on saturday. people returning to the washington area on sunday, no problem, should be a lot of sunshine with high temperatures in the upper 50s to about 60. so all in all, good looking five-day forecast. that will do it for weather. let's get to traffic and lauren demarco. so things are better on the beltway? things are much better on the beltway. better in montgomery county on the inner loop and outer loop. the incident near mormon temple is gone. and be patient through the parking lots because they are full and a lot of pedestrians out there. approaching oxon hill, 210, after kirby hill road and the investigation has been on going
7:35 am
and traffic is diverted on to livingston road. some callers are saying this is taking 45 minutes from palmer road up to the beltway with this detour so slow traffic there. once on the beltway, things look great. the accident in montgomery county is clear. here at the wilson bridge, no problems toward virginia and prince george's county. looking great in both directions. light volume out there. 95 and 395 both running at speed. here is the 14th street bridge and great across into the district. h.o.v. lanes are running north and restrictions are in affect. that's a check f your fox 5 on- time traffic. new this morning, asian stock markets have tumbled as investors are blaming the dollars continued slide from the dubai massive credit problem. they have asked to delay paying back a $60 billion debt. the dollar weakened to a new 14
7:36 am
year low and the dow down and nasdaq off nearly 50. we have a live picture at tysons corner a a lot of people shopping. bargain hunters are out in full force trying to score a deal and they're probably going to find one. ellen davis, vice president of e national retail federation joins us with black friday shopping strategies. thank you for joining us. >> thank you. >> you're not out in the mall so we'll have you here. >> that's right. >> and you recently did a survey. it was some 134 million people expected to be out today, up from last year which shocked me considering the economy. >> that's true. but in an economy like this one, when price is so important, you might be willing to get out of bed earlier than any year where it was not as important to be on a budget. so a lot of people bargain shopping. >> and how do they begin that. what is the best way to go about -- >> because there are sales and people want to spend but not break the bank. >> the best thing to do is do
7:37 am
your homework ahead of time. make a list and know everybody you're buying for and how much you want to spend on them and then also on the front end check all of the ads. the internet ads and everything in the newspaper. retailers are doing marketing this year so people will know where the best deals are before they head to the stores. >> we have some deals putting up and you mentioned comparing prices. what is the best way to go about that. >> retailers websites are an easy way to determine what is on sale. you can even determine in some instances which item might be in particular stores, check the ads, the internet and you can find the best deals. >> and it's not just about today. you mentioned -- look through the entire weekend. there is just sales gallor and there is still saturday and sunday. >> a lot of stores are having their black fridays extended. so if you didn't get out this morning by 6:00 a.m., you should be able to get some
7:38 am
deals on saturday, sunday and cyber monday. >> is that still a big deal? are you seeing a lot of websites are going after consumers with thfree shipping, with the big deals? >> yes. cyber monday this year will be huge. a lot of retailers not only offering free shipping but some of them are offering percentages off the entire site, low prices just like you find in the store. and even if you went out black friday weekend it's a good idea to nose around on monday and see what you can find. >> and retailers are probably hoping for the big crowds and it's great to see the pictures of all of the people. is this going to be enough today and this weekend to recuperate from what has been a bad year retail-wise? >> today unfortunately is not the whole picture. we have a long holiday season ahead of us. granted, if the sales turn out well and there are a lot of peple shopping today that's a good sign for the next few weeks but retailers know this is the start of a long race for them during the holiday season. >> certainly is. thankou for your tips. >> thank you. >> i think i'm going to waiter
7:39 am
not cyber monday. ellen davis, thank you so much. >> thank you. the time now is 7:37 on this friday morning. even though it's the day after a holiday, a special guest has come in to join us. we're talking about former redskin great joe theismann is here and we'll talk about this weekend's game when we come back and very important medical information for you. and then after 8:00, find out who will perform during the halftime of the superbowl, which is not all that far away. coming up in the beginning of february. stay with us. fox 5 morning news continues right after the break. again, it is now 7:38. (announcer) we're in the energy business.
7:40 am
7:41 am
but we're also in the showing-kids- new-worlds business. and the startup-capital- for-barbers business. and the this-won't- hurt-a-bit business. because we don't just work here. we live here. these are our families. and our neighbors. and by changing lives we're in more than the energy business we're in the human energy business. chevron.
7:42 am
this weekend the redskins take on the eagles up in philly, catch it 1:00 sunday here on fox 5. now joining us today doing double duty, we have a special guest to help us out with our friday football forecast, joe theismann is with us this morning.
7:43 am
it's great to see you. >> you too, steve. >> let's talk about a very important health issue that is important to you on a personal level. >> it's called triple-a which is an ab dommic aorta aneurysm and it highlight this is particular part of the body. my dad was diagnosed with it about five years ago. he had triple bypass surgery and found out that the artery that feeds blood to the lower part of the extremities if the wall gets thin and that aneurysm occurs and it's ruptures, it's called the silent killer. because i heard a bus driver had this happen and you can log on and find out more.
7:44 am
and if it wasn't for my dad, i wouldn't have known. women understand it 100% because it's an ultrasound. and when you go get a physical and i encourage everybody to annually get a physical. ask for the ultrasound and this particular aortic ultrasound so they can find out if there is a problem. because we've talked about other health issues before. if you get early diagnosis, you can get early treatment and early treatment means you have a chance to take ce of the problem and live longer lives. >> and the most important thing is to get checks. and you're wearing the lapel and understand the suspenders. how is your doing? >> he's going great. in december my dad will be 84 years old. he and mom went bowling yesterday. he played golf and goes bowling, every time i see them i consider myself the luckiest guy in the world. >> and i read 70-80% of the people that have it have never
7:45 am
heard of it. >> over 1 million people are walking around with triple-a and don't know it because the symptoms aren't there. unless you say to the doctor, i want this checked, then you find it. it's a ten-minute procedure and it's harmless and just an ultrasod. women have it with -- pregnant women get it all of the time and it occurs in men over 60 and it is the third leading sudden death killer of men over 60. let's talk about what may be a bigger challenge and that is diagnosing the redskins. >> oh, god. >> and how tough is it to watch a team now at 3-7? >> you know what, it's funny, because i do a radio show in town now on espn 980 and i do it on mondays and i thought it would be fun. but when you lose 7 ballgames it's not fun at all. and this team has developed a personality that i don't really
7:46 am
think is good for them. what they do is they play to the level of their opponents, that is what they've done. at the beginning of the season it was supposed to be easy, but we played lousy. we played well against the cowboys last week. i expect them to beat the eagles this week. >> and the eagles played down to the raiders. >> exactly. and that's the way this personality is. rotating offensive line has been the biggest problemp we're on our second left tackle, our third right guard, our third running back. and you can't have that type of cob sift ensy. everybody says it's the quarterback. how do you know? how do you know unless you're on your back. >> i'm going todefend jason. >> and people are saying, if you have this injury bug there is not much you can do. but for everybody else on the field, how hard is it for them not it get drawn down by the fact you have do replacement guys that are rotating in and out. >> one thing that drove me, because i went through a 6-10
7:47 am
season back in 1980 and the thing that drives you is this is your job. like going to work, starting on monday when you go back to year, you say we're having a tough yr, difficult time, financial markets are in question but you still have to go to work and do the best you possibly canch even though it's a team sport, you almost have to make it personal and say i'm going to be the best i can be and if you get enough guys doing that and the team comes together and then you one a ballgame and then another one and then moment up starts and people in the city start feeling good about you. are you listening, redskins? and people get excited. >> and there are opt mists say run the table and finish 9-7 and forget about it. everybody is saying campbell and jim zorn probably won't be back next year.
7:48 am
and is that a good idea to blow everything up? >> no. in the case of jim zorn, you've taken away his play calling, what is he going to do? you brought him here as a coordinator and now taken it away from him and as a head coach, what has changed. i think in jason campbells case you have to look around and see who are the free agents that are available. there was this big brouhaha, we want jay cutler. no we don't. we didn't and we don't. he's inconsistent, he's a pouter, we don't need that kind of stuff. i think jason is a great alternative but it's difficult to evaluate when he's looking like this all of the time. the defense is doing great though. >> joe theismann, it's always a pleasure. >> thanks, everyone. >> we'll put information on the medical condition joe was talking about on our website at myfoxdc.com. >> i'm going to start the joe for coach campaign. >> he's like wait a minute, i don't want that job. >> timeout. >> that makes sense. we appreciate it.
7:49 am
